RCD Installation

Do you need a new consumer unit or a remote RCD

I offer a remote RCD fitting service, this is a stand-alone unit not part of the consumer unit.

I only recommend this option if the consumer unit is in good condition but not up to modern standards.

Older fuse boards can be identified by ceramic fuses that need new fuse wire when blown. A single fuse can often be seen with many cables attached and this means that electrical components using little power have a fuse that is too big and will not blow when a fault occurs.

I always recommend the upgrading of these old fuse boards to a modern twin RCD multi MCB (miniature circuit breaker) unit to bring the installation up to 17th edition specification.

This is a cost effective approach as the new unit provides spare capacity if more fused circuits are added at a later date.

An RCD (residual current device) is a sensitive electrical component that will disconnect electric power when it detects a fault. This eliminates the dangers of electric shocks (particularly important with outside electrical equipment) and also offers some protection against electrical fires.
